Born on May 3, 1946, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Gumbel was the eldest child of Rhea Alice LeCesne and Richard Gumbel, a judge.He was raised on Chicago’s South Side, where he attended De La Salle Institute.Gumbel graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, with a Bachelor of Arts in English and was an active member of the college’s baseball team.

Gumbel’s broadcasting career began in 1973 when his brother, Bryant Gumbel, informed him of a sports announcer opening at WMAQ-TV in Chicago.This opportunity marked the start of a remarkable journey that would span over five decades.He later joined ESPN, where he anchored “SportsCenter,” and subsequently worked with MSG, providing play-by-play for NBA games and hosting pregame and postgame shows for the New York Yankees.

In 1988, Gumbel began his first tenure with CBS Sports, covering a wide array of sports, including the NFL, college basketball, and Major League Baseball.He became a familiar face during the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, known as March Madness, and was a key figure in CBS’s coverage for many years.Notably, Gumbel made history as the first African-American announcer to call play-by-play for a major U.S. sports championship when he covered Super Bowl XXXV in 2001.
